Tipping in Ireland: what's normal in 2026.

Ireland tips more than continental Europe but far less than the US. A sit-down meal gets around 10–15% for good service; a pint at the bar gets a thank-you. The main thing to watch for is a service charge already on the bill.

Tipping is customary at sit-down restaurants: 10–15% for good service, unless a service charge is already on the bill. Currency: euro (EUR, €) — Northern Ireland uses the pound.

The one-screen rule: €60 dinner → €66–€69, no tip for drinks ordered at the bar, round up the taxi, €1–€2 per bag for the porter.

Cultural context

Irish hospitality workers are paid at least the full national minimum wage — there is no lower “tipped wage” as in the US — so tips are a reward rather than the core of anyone’s pay. Even so, leaving 10% or more after a sit-down meal is standard, and 12.5–15% is common for very good service in Dublin.

Since December 2022, the Payment of Wages (Amendment) (Tips and Gratuities) Act requires employers to pass card and other electronic tips to staff, stops them using tips to make up contractual wages, and obliges them to display their tipping policy. Mandatory service charges must also say whether they go to staff. In practice that means tipping on the card machine is now much more reliable in Ireland than in many European countries — though cash handed to the server is still the most direct.

Money mechanics

Card payment is everywhere, and most restaurant terminals will offer a tip option. Thanks to the 2022 tips law, card tips must be distributed to staff, so using the terminal is fine; cash is still welcome. Read the bill before choosing a percentage: if a service charge is printed on it — common for larger groups and in some Dublin restaurants — that is the tip, and you don’t need to add more. In Northern Ireland, prices and tips are in pounds sterling and UK norms apply — see tipping in the UK.

The phrase to use

"Keep the change." / "Go raibh maith agat." (guh ROH mah AH-gut) English is the everyday language, so “keep the change” works anywhere. “Go raibh maith agat” is Irish for “thank you” — rarely needed, always appreciated.

Mistakes visitors make

  • Tipping on top of a service charge. If the bill already includes 10–12.5% for service, you don’t need to add more.
  • Tipping the bartender per drink. That’s a US habit. At an Irish pub bar, paying for your round is all that’s expected.
  • Assuming Northern Ireland uses euro. Belfast and the rest of Northern Ireland use pounds sterling and follow UK tipping norms.

FAQ

How much do you tip at a restaurant in Ireland?

10–15% for good table service. If a service charge is already on the bill — common for groups of six or more — that covers it.

Do you tip in Irish pubs?

Not for drinks ordered at the bar. If you have a meal with table service in a pub, around 10% is customary.

Do card tips reach staff in Ireland?

They should. Since December 2022 Irish law requires employers to pass electronic tips to staff and to display how tips are shared.

Do you tip taxi drivers in Ireland?

Round up to the next euro, or add about 10% if the driver helped with luggage.

Crossing the Irish Sea? Tipping in the UK follows similar rules, with the “discretionary service charge” to watch for. The country hub has all 24 destinations.
