Tipping in Portugal: what's normal in 2026.

Portugal is a low-pressure tipping country. Nobody expects American percentages, but a few coins or a rounded-up bill for good service are normal and appreciated — especially in Lisbon, Porto and the Algarve, where tourism is a large part of the economy.

Tipping is optional and appreciated. Sit-down restaurants: 5–10% in cash for good service, or round up. Currency: euro (EUR, €). Cafés and pastelarias: leave the small change.

The one-screen rule: €32 lunch → leave €35, coins for a bica, round up the taxi, €1–€2 per bag for the porter — and only eat the couvert if you want to pay for it.

Cultural context

Portuguese restaurant prices include service, and staff earn at least the national minimum wage, so the tip — gorjeta — is a genuine extra rather than part of the wage. Locals often leave nothing at a quick café stop and a few euros after a good meal; a rounded-up bill is the most common gesture. Tourist-heavy restaurants have grown used to visitors leaving around 10%, and some now print “service not included” on the menu, but no restaurant can make a tip mandatory.

The line on the bill that confuses visitors isn’t a tip at all: the couvert. Bread, butter, olives, sometimes cheese or sardine pâté arrive at the table before you order. They’re not free — each item you eat is charged. If you don’t want them, say so or push them aside untouched, and they shouldn’t appear on the bill.

Money mechanics

Cards are accepted almost everywhere, but Portuguese card terminals usually don’t offer a tip option, and a tip added to a card payment isn’t guaranteed to reach the server. Pay the bill by card if you like, then leave the tip in coins or a small note. Keep €1 and €2 coins handy — they’re the working currency of tipping in Portugal. Bills are presented at the table, and you’ll often need to ask for the check: “A conta, por favor.”

The phrase to use

"Fique com o troco." (FEE-keh kong oo TRO-koo) “Keep the change.” Handy in taxis and cafés. For a sit-down meal, just leave the coins in the bill folder and say “obrigado” (if you’re a man) or “obrigada” (if you’re a woman) — “thank you.”

Mistakes visitors make

  • Eating the couvert, then disputing it. If you touch the bread and olives, they’ll be on the bill. If you don’t want them, send them back at the start.
  • Tipping 20% American-style. It isn’t wrong, but it’s far above local norms; 5–10% for good service is generous in Portugal.
  • Adding the tip on the card machine. Most terminals can’t, and when they can it may not reach the server. Leave cash.

FAQ

Is tipping expected in Portugal?

No, but it is appreciated. For good service at a sit-down restaurant, 5–10% in cash or rounding up the bill is normal. At cafés and bars, leaving small change is enough.

What is the couvert in Portuguese restaurants?

The bread, butter, olives and small starters brought to the table before you order. They are not free: you pay for what you eat. If you don’t want them, send them back or leave them untouched and they should not be charged.

Should I tip in cash or by card in Portugal?

Cash. Most card terminals have no tip option, so pay the bill by card if you like and leave the tip in coins or a small note.

Do you tip taxi drivers in Portugal?

Round up to the next euro or two. Tipping in Uber or Bolt is optional.

Heading across the border? Tipping in Spain works much the same way — small, optional, in cash. For France, the rule is service compris: see tipping in France. The country hub has all 24 destinations.
