How much to tip a bellhop and valet in 2026.

Bellhops, porters, doormen and valets are the hotel staff you actually meet — and the tips are flat dollar amounts paid in cash, on the spot. Here are the numbers, when to hand them over, and what changes them.

Bellhop: $2 per bag, $5 minimum. Valet: $3–$5 every time the car comes back. Doorman: $1–$2 for a cab or help with bags.

Tip when the service happens, in cash. The valet fee on your bill is not the tip.

The numbers, and where they come from

Etiquette references such as the Emily Post Institute have long put the bellhop at $1–$2 per bag and the valet at $2–$5 per retrieval. With costs higher in 2026, the realistic US norm sits at the upper end: $2 per bag with a floor of about $5 for a trip to the room, and $3–$5 for the valet — $5 at upscale hotels and in big cities.

These are per-action tips, not percentages. The bellhop carries the same three bags whether the room costs $150 or $750, so the tip follows the work: the number of bags, how heavy they are, and how far they go.

Edge cases

You carry your own bags

No tip needed. If a bellhop offers and you decline, that’s fine — just say “Thanks, I’ve got it.” If they walk you to the room anyway and explain the thermostat, $2–$3 is a gracious thank-you.

Valet parking is “complimentary”

Free valet is free for you, not for the attendant. Tip the usual $3–$5 at pickup — arguably more important when there’s no fee at all.

The bellhop brought bags to the curb and loaded the car

Treat it as one trip: $2 per bag, at least $5. If the valet and the bellhop are different people, each gets their own tip.

Cash only?

Yes, in practice. A few hotels now let you add a tip to the folio or use a QR code, but cash handed directly to the person is still the norm and the fastest way for the money to reach them. Keep $1s and $5s in a separate pocket for the first day.

FAQ

How much do you tip a bellhop?

$2 per bag in the US, with a $5 minimum for any trip to the room. Add $1–$2 per bag for very heavy or awkward items, or if the bellhop also shows you how the room works. Tip again at checkout if they bring the bags down.

How much do you tip a hotel valet?

$3–$5 each time the car is brought back to you. Many people also give $2–$5 at drop-off. The valet parking fee on your hotel bill goes to the hotel or the parking company, not the attendant.

Do you tip the valet when dropping off or picking up?

Picking up is the one that counts — tip when the car is returned. Tipping at drop-off is optional; it’s a nice touch if you’ll be in and out several times or have a lot of luggage to unload.

Do I tip the doorman?

$1–$2 if they hail a taxi or help with bags to the curb; $5 for hailing a cab in the rain or loading a full car. Opening the door alone doesn’t need a tip.

Do I tip for luggage storage at the bell desk?

Yes — $1–$2 per bag, usually when you collect the bags. If the same bellhop takes them to your car, round up to at least $5.

How much do you tip a bellhop in Mexico?

20–50 pesos per bag in pesos, or about US$1–$2 per bag at resorts used to US guests. Pesos are preferred; coins are hard for staff to exchange. See tipping in Mexico.
